Facts about hebivores

Herbivores that have canine teeth

Some people think canines make you a carnivore, but actually most mammals have canine teeth, many herbivores have canine teeth including gorillas, hippos, deer sheep but only the upper canines are large the lower teeth are rounded. If you compare that to a carnivores teeth they have sharp large canines on both top and bottom teeth.

Do herbivores eat meat ?

Most herbivores will eat meat especially if they have little choice or are starving, even pandas who are famous for eating only bamboo will eat meat from a dead carcass if they need to survive.

why herbivores have longer small intestine?

Herbivores have to be able to cope with the digestion of cellulose which is found in the cell walls of plants and is very hard to digest and so takes a longer time, Hence why herbivores that eat grass need a much longer small intestine just to allow complete digestion of the plant cellulose.

Carnivorous animals struggle to digest plant cellulose.

which herbivores eat grass?

Many large mammal herbivores eat grass some eat only grass some like elephants eat grass, leaves and any fruits they may find they are known as mixed feeders. Herbivores like cows, buffalo and elk have a diet of almost only grass but get a lot of extra nutrition from the bugs in the grass.

which herbivores live in the ocean?

Some herbivores live in the sea or ocean these herbivores survive from eating things like sea kelp and vegetation on the ocean floor. Some of the herbivores that live in the sea include sea turtles, manatees, surgeon fish and jellyfish as well as many other herbivore fish and barnacles.

why are herbivores bigger than carnivores?

The largest herbivores are bigger than the largest carnivores because firstly they get their protein straight from the plant which is where all proteins comes from.

Carnivores that get their protein from meat are eating 2nd hand protein that originally came from plants but was then digested by an animal which was then eaten by the carnivore thus the carnivore is still eating protein but its not direct from the source of plants.

Also scientists believe herbivores grew larger through evolution to be able to graze larger areas and reach higher trees as well as putting off predators as predators prefer easier prey. For example a pride of lions will walk right past a herd of elephants to get to the smaller easier prey.

why do herbivores have horns or antlers?

Almost all animals that have horns or antlers are herbivores and the reason they have developed horns or antlers is because almost all herbivores are prey for carnivores and need some form of defense.

After the herbivores developed these forms of defense they were then used for mating purposes as usually the female will choose the male with the biggest horns (not too different humans after all) .

why are herbivores called primary consumers?

When we refer to herbivores as primary consumers this refers to the food chain, the first level of the food chain is plants we call them producers, next in the food chain we have herbivores known as primary consumers, then we have secondary consumers which are carnivores.

Do herbivores have incisors ?

Herbivores will usually have to eat plants to survive and so will have sharp incisors as well as larger wider and flatter molars for chewing vegetation or grass. Some herbivores have only lower incisors and a strong rigid upper jaw to help chewing when plants this is common in some deer species.

Do herbivores eat eggs?

Herbivores will eat eggs as well as meat and animal proteins, not necessarily as a preference but as a means to survive, some herbivores will eat eggs, snails, bugs, fish, mushrooms, fruit and all sorts of creatures to survive its all dependent on the situation and what they need to do to survive.

are humans herbivores and should humans be herbivores?

Humans are herbivores anatomically our bodies are designed to eat Nuts, vegetables, fruit, and legumes and humans are not carnivores. Human jaws are able to move sideways for chewing vegetation like all herbivores and not like carnivorous animals that have jaws that only move up and down with large sharp canine teeth on top and bottom jaws designed for ripping flesh off bone.

Are humans are supposed to eat meat? most scientists say no, if you put a carnivore next to a dead carcass on the side of the road as long as the animal has a slight appetite the carcass will set off the hunger chemicals in their brain they will start producing sliver ready to eat.

On the flip side you can Starve a human for 24 hours and that very hungry human can sit next to the dead carcass and it will not set off any hunger chemical in their brain because humans are not natural meat eaters.

That doesn't mean humans should never eat meat it just means that like most herbivores we should only eat meat to survive when our primary food source of plants is not available.
